The programme covers the following safety promotion activities:

The Safe Community Coalition of Brockville & District is comprised of 65 community partners, representing a large variety of agencies & volunteers. The Coalition sponsors injury prevention programs, some of which continue each year, and supports other programs initiated by our partners. This report highlights programs the Coalition actively participates in, but does not include all the safety & injury prevention programs in place in our community.

Children 0-14 years:
Road Safety Challenge: A program sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, where communities work to highlight Road Safety issues within their area for one week during the month of May. Programs for Road Safety for Children included a:wpe14.jpg (23130 bytes)

  • Pedestrian Safety Walk with children in kindergarten & Grades 1 & 2wpe13.jpg (25727 bytes)

  • Bicycle Rodeo for all children

  • Deputy Seatbelt Program for kindergarten children

Risk Watch: A program developed by the National Fire Protection Association was successfully piloted in Brockville, beginning in 1998. This program is school-based (Grade 1 to 8) and addresses the 8 most common areas of injury for children:

  • Motor Vehicle Safety
  • Fire and Burn Prevention
  • Choking, Suffocation, and Strangulation Prevention
  • Poisoning Prevention
  • Falls Prevention
  • Firearms Injury Prevention
  • Bike & Pedestrian Safety
  • Water Safety

 

Car Seat Clinics: Car Seat clinics are organised 2 to 3 times per year, with the support of the District Health Unit, the Police Service, the Fire Department and other community volunteers. Car seats are checked to ensure correct installation & use with the child.

Racing Against Drugs: A program sponsored by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) which addresses drug & alcohol use as well as injury prevention. The Coalition organizes the week-long event where, approximately 2000 school aged children (Grade 5 & 6) visit to participate in "Pit-stops" organized by community agencies. They talk to children about avoiding drug & alcohol use, alternate activities and preventing injuries.

Youth 15-24 years:
Young Worker Awareness Program (YWAP): Sponsored by the Industrial Accident Prevention Association (IAPA), this program is delivered to high school students by health & safety experts who volunteer their time to teach young people about workplace safety. It includes such topics as:

  • Principles of Health & Safety
  • Health & Safety Law
  • Rights & Responsibilities, including WHMIS
  • What To Do If I Get Hurt

 

ForeYouth-Brockville: The Safe Community Coalition is pleased to have a new partnership with Youth Unlimited Brockville, called ForeYouth. This is a partnership that will raise money to fund youth programs that will meet the goal of making Brockville the safest environment for our youth to live, learn, work and play: emotionally, spiritually, physically and intellectually.

Adults 25-64 years:
Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP): A program in partnership with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) to enable small businesses to prevent workplace injuries. The program provides Health & Safety training to owners and managers and supports them to develop policies and comply with legislation. This group incentive program provides financial rebates when the group collectively lowers injury claims costs. Brockville has been the only Ontario community to receive three consecutive rebates to participating businesses (more than $300,000 returned to the community).

Elderly 65+ years:
Fall Prevention: A Coalition subcommittee sponsored the "Steady As You Go" program in 1998 and 1999 to prevent falls in seniors. Plans are underway for Fall 2001 to revitalize this program with several new community partners.

  • Boat Trailer Safety: fact sheet distribution
  • Pedestrian Safety Walk with children in kindergarten & Grades 1 & 2
  • Bicycle Rodeo for all children
  • Car Seat Clinics
  • Deputy Seatbelt Program for kindergarten children

 

Annual Holiday Media Campaign: Messages about the RIDE program to prevent Drinking & Driving; messages to prevent aggressive driving

Harassment: Distribution of "Harassment in Sport" pamphlet in partnership with Sexual Assault Committee to soccer and ice hockey clubs.

Radio Media Campaign: including Boating Safety

  • Safety Signs at Railway Walkways
  • Safety Day at "Riverfest" Festival
  • Radio Media Campaign: addressing many safety issues such as road, bicycles, boat, and skating safety

 

"Accidents" (non-intentional injuries) in the following injury areas:

Violence prevention: Member of Dating Violence Task Force

Suicide prevention: Community agencies such as the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital & Interval House provide suicide prevention services. The Coalition plans for 2002 include exploring potential partnerships to address this issue.

Programs aiming at "High risk-groups":

The Coalition considers children and seniors to be at-risk groups in our community. Programs to address injury prevention for children include Risk Watch, car seat clinics, and Road Safety Challenge. The program to prevent falls in seniors will be augmented in Fall 2001.

Surveillance of injuries:

Brockville General Hospital provided injury statistics at the start of the Coalition in 1997. Recently, they have provided information about emergency room visits and discussions are underway to re-establish the collection of injury data.
