The programme covers the following safety promotion activities:

For the age group  

Children 0-14 years:

  • Primary health education – antenatal and postnatal.
    0-6 child health;
  • Safety rules ok – school children;
    Competitions annually for eye safety and bike safety;
  • Sports injury prevention with all school based sport and recreation;
  • Kidsafe program;
  • Health promoting school program;
  • First aid courses for year 7 students


Youth 15-24 years:

  • Youth advisory committee to local government;
  • Condom Vending machine;
  • Alcohol accord;
  • Youth "at risk" program;
  • Youth house;
  • Youth mentoring program;
  • Structural change in community through hazzard audits of roads,parks,playgrounds etc.

Adults 25-64 years:

  • Sports injury prevention-coaches and umpires accredited;
  • Alcohol accord-focus on family based entertainment with minimal alcohol;
  • Road safety program;
  • Beach and coastal safety-develop awareness of risks for tourists;
  • Structural changes to tourist destinations to prevent injury;
  • Farm safety program.

 

Elderly 65+ years:

  • Stay on your feet program;
  • Training in injury prevention for all carers and health care workers;
  • Structural changes to the roads, footpaths and access points around town for the elderly and disabled.

At the following environments:

Home:

  • One to one audits of homes of people over 65;
  • Education programs for people to identify their own hazzards;
  • Visit by occupational therapist to people with arthritis-assess;
  • Activities of daily living to prevent joint injury;
  • Child health nurse visits and includes education on injury prevention-scalds and falls.

Traffic:

  • Road safety program;
  • Hazzard audits to identify prblems;
  • Review of school roads and childrens crossings, speed limits;
  • Introduction of speed humps, one way traffic areas;
  • Improved road signs.

Occupational:

  • Farm safety program;
  • Develop awareness of back care;
  • identification of risks;
  • Educate agricultural school students on injury prevention within the curriculum.
  • Work safe program –promote safe work environment within business and service areas in town.

 

School:

  • Safety rules ok program;
  • Hazzard audits of the school environment;
  • Changes to school;
  • Where appropriate, remove or replace equipment etc.
  • First aid courses for year 7;
  • Bike safety program;
  • Eye safety program;

 

Sports:

  • Level 1: coaching accreditation for all coaches;
  • Injury prevention program for all persons involved in sports;
  • Increased shade at outdoor sports venues;
  • Encourage warm up and cool down as appropriate within all school sports programs.

 

Leisure:

  • Tourist safety program – hazzard audits of all major tourist destinations, beaches, Reserves, parks, walk trails etc.

Food safety program for major food outlets

Violence prevention:

  • Data collection through health and police;
  • Womans collective provides support and refuge;
  • Domestic violence information kits available through health service, this provides local support info;
  • Child protection service.

Suicide prevention:

  • Communtiy mental health service;
  • Suicide prevention program;
  • Post natal depression screening – Edinburgh
  • Postnatal depression scale;
  • Post natal depression support group;
  • Bouncing back program.
  • MOM S support group.
  • Youth house and youth support officer.

Programs aiming at "High risk-groups":

  • Youth program
  • Suicide prevention Program
  • Tourist Safety
  • Alcohol Accord-18-30yr olds
  • Stay on your Feet Program >65 yr olds.

Hospital, Schools, Recreation Centre, Police, Child Health.
Injury Surveillance data collection project: Alcohol data collection Project. Sports injury Register. School injury register.

Numbers per year:1994 data –593 injuries. 1999 data currently being collected.
Population base:1994 data-3,500. 1999 data-4,500.
