The programme covers the following safety promotion activities:

For the age group

Children 0-14 years:
Community projects Young Children and Safety to prevent injuries by accidents in the house and the immediate surroudings of the house, with health education, intersectoral activitites (safety of playgrounds), training and the so-called GIANT's HOUSE.

Youth 15-24 years:
Aggression: learning to cope with aggression.

Adults 25-64 years:

Elderly 65+ years:

Preventing injuries by falling of the elderly, on the basis of a check-scheme, health education, an exhibition for the elderly and the promotion of physical condition

At the following environments:

Home:
For young children and the elderly

Traffic:
In the community projects, for children and elderly, if there are hazards
mentioned by the inhabitants.

Occupational:
The municipality is not responsable for the safety of working conditions

School:
In the context of the community projects on child safety the schools and the youth health care are involved.

Sports:
At this moment no specific projects: we have a project in development with the Department for Sports and Leisure activities, to promote safety within their activities.

Leisure:

“Accidents” (non-intentional injuries) in the following injury areas:

Violence prevention (intentional injuries):
The project Aggression, to learn young people to cope with aggression in their environment. And the project 'Across the line' to prevent sexual violence and harassment.

Suicide prevention (self-inflected injuries):
The programme 'Skills for Life' for young adults in high schools is dealing with the problems of young people.

Programs aiming at “High risk-groups”:
Preventing injuries by falling of elderly; Young children and safety.

Surveillance of injuries:
The Rotterdam Neighbourhood Indicator System, also with indicators on safety:- In relation to specific safety-subjects the following data are collected on a continuous basis:

  1. Hospital admissions (SHR) of injured by accidents for men;
  2. Idem for women;
  3. Number injured due to violence,
  4. Idem, per 10.000 inhabitants,
  5. Number of injuries by falls,
  6. Idem, per 10.000 inhabitants,
  7. Number of injured by traffic-accidents (ambulance),
  8. Idem, per 10.000,

And some safety-related subjects:

  1. Number of suicide-attempts, in total and per 10.000 inhabitants,
  2. Number of violence offence, idem,
  3. Number of life-threatening offence, idem,
  4. Number of mistreatments or threats, idem,
  5. Number of theft with violence, idem,
  6. Number of sex crimes, idem,
  7. Number of capital offence (vermogensdelict), idem,
  8. Number of burglaries, idem,
  9. Number of car-break-ins, idem,
  10. Number of pickpocketing, idem,
