The programme covers the following safety promotion activities:

For the age-group

Children 0-14 years
:

  • Education for parents about children accidents;
  • Home safety checklists;
  • A safe Child Care through injury and accident registration, children safety rounds, safety representatives and education;
  • A safe school as a part of a health promotion school (please see ahead "School");
  • Activities for a safety school way and for an increased usage of bicycle helmets.

    Youth 15-24 years:
  • A safe school as a part of a health promotion school (please see ahead "School");
  • Alcohol prevention;
  • Special free youth-bus home from the downtown after disco.

    Adults 25-64 years:
  • A Risk Hot Line
  • Information through the local media

    The elderly 65+ years:
  • A safe Elderly Care through injury and accident registration, elderly safety rounds, elderly safety representatives and education;
  • Education by elderly safety representatives in non-government organisation;
  • Exhibition and seminaries for elderly;
  • Home safety checklists;
  • Elderly safety bags:
  • Home visit for all 75 years old;
  • Subsidisation of slip spikes.

  • Checklist for children and elderly;
  • Information through the local media and by representatives.

    Traffic:
  • MöTs - a unique road transport project including traffic safety, accessibility and the environment impact of the road transport system. http://www.mots-i-uddevalla.nu/;
  • Interviews by telephone and measure bicycle helmets and seat belts use every year;
  • Education in Eco Driving - a way of driving more economically, safer and environmentally friendly;
  • Children´s way to school - an inventory of the safety of the roads;
  • Theoretical education in the subject area;
  • A bicycle-project - to make people choose their bicycles instead of their car for short distances, to wear helmets and to realise the fun of the bicycle riding;
  • Quality assurance of transport - to make companies demand better cars, fuel etc.;
  • Seminars, activity-days, advertising campaigns etc.

School:

Different activities for a safe school as a part of a health promotion school:

  • An activity-creating school yard;
  • Children´s way to school - an inventory of the safety of the roads;
  • New rules for free school bus, witch take care about the traffic safe in a better way;
  • Questionnaires with focus on pupils perceptions of attitudes to violence and the usage between pupils;
  • Activities to prevent bullying and violence.

Sports:

  • Regular inspections of grass grounds, buildings, gymnasiums and other places.


Leisure:

  • Activities to prevent hearing problems.

 

Violence prevention:

  • A political violence preventive programme;
  • A lot of alcohol prevention activities;
  • Special free youth-bus home from the downtown after disco every month;
  • Education about women assault.

Suicide prevention: No

Programme aiming at "High-risk groups"

  • Focus on children an elderly, particularly elderly over 80 years.

Professions: A public health planner who has the general responsibility for the Safe Community work as well as other public health work in Uddevalla. A project leader for the road transport project MöTs.
Permanent: The public health planners job is permanent.
Temporary: The project leader works until 2002.
Organization: A Public Health Council, a cooperation between the municipality of Uddevalla and The County Council of Västra Götaland have the political responsibility and a reference group for the Safe Community work with the leader of the workgroups among others.

With a process evaluation, we have studied what began as a three-year project "Safe Uddevalla" in 1995 and the same year as Uddevalla was appointed a Safe Community (1998) was extended to public health in general. Now, the work is of a permanent character. " Are we on the right track?" http://www.uddevalla.se/

International commitments:

Study visits: An international travel seminar visited Uddevalla 1994. In 1998 and 1999 there have been several study-visits from Spain and Norway. From 1995 there has been several study-visits from other municipalities in Sweden.
